Ewen Callaway reviews a biopic of Calvin Bridges, the wild-living, wild-haired genetics pioneer for Nature's Book & Arts Section.

Calvin Bridges is best known for three things: his pioneering work on genetics in the early twentieth century, his womanizing and his gravity-defying mop of hair. The Fly Room, a biopic told through the eyes of his daughter Betsey, also shows the scientist as a sometimes dedicated, often distracted father who struggled to balance intellectual curiosity with family obligations.

Special Screening at New York University's Center for Genomics and Systems Biology

New York University will host Alexis Gambis, founder and director of Imagine Science Films, for a discussion of his first feature-length film, “The Fly Room,” on Fri., Jan. 23, 2015, at NYU’s Center for Genomics and Systems Biology (CGSB) Auditorium (12 Waverly Place, between Greene and Mercer Streets).

The evening will begin at 6 p.m. with a screening of “The Fly Room” (2014, 83 min.), which Gambis wrote and directed, followed by a discussion on science and the cinema. Inspired by a true story, the film explores the relationship between a 10-year old daughter Betsey and her father-scientist as he gives her an unorthodox education in genetics.

The event is free and open to the public. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information, call 212.998.3801 or email mz991@nyu.edu. The evening is part of NYU’s “Science at the Square,” a series of lectures focusing on scientific topics of interest to the general public and sponsored by NYU’s Dean for Science. Gambis is also a visiting assistant professor of biology at NYU Abu Dhabi.
